Covert Coordination

It has been implicitly assumed in the generative literature that coordinate structures are base-generated. This paper argues, however, that coordinate structures can be derived, their formations involving movement. We demonstrate that comitative phrases in Japanese are in fact part of coordinate structures, and that these structures are formed in covert syntax. We show, adopting the Move-F theory in Chomsky (1995), that the features of a comitative phrase are adjoined to its associated argument. Further, we argue that the differences between comitative phrases in Japanese and those in Russian and English are accounted for by the different values of the features of a comitative marker.
